ADMINISTRATIVE ARRANGEMENTS

1.         INTRODUCTION

The information contained herein is for the benefit and reference of delegates of the
D-8 Working Group Meeting On Clean Coal Technologies which will be held by
Turkish Coal Enterprises(TKI).

2.         MEETING INFORMATION

2.1 Date and Venue

The dates of the meeting are 11-14 July 2012.
Deadline for nomination is 4 July 2012.
The venue of the meeting is Izmir Hilton Hotel.

3.         ACCOMMODATION

Arrival time of the Participants to the hotel is 14:00 pm, on 11 July 2012
Departure time of the Participants from the hotel is 12:00 pm, on 14 July 2012
In case of any change or unconformity related to the above mentioned dates and the
flight schedules, early arrival and late departure to I from the hotel shall be arranged by TKI.
The expenses of 2 participants from D-8 Member States and at most 4 participants from D-8
Secretariat will be borne by TKI. The Member States are kindly requested to provide full
names, status and contact details of the participants as soon as possible.

4.   TECHNICAL VISIT TO THE AEGEAN LIGNITE ESTABLISHMENT

Turkish Coal Enterprises (TKI) has programmed a site visit to one of its establishments, namely Aegean Lignite Establishment, in Soma on 13 July 2012. Brief information about the Aegean Lignite Establishment is as follows;

The enterprise has lignite reserves amounting to 663 million tons with a lower heating value between 2.080 – 3.150 kcal/kg. The reserves are found within the borders of the Soma district of the Manisa Province. The permits of these reserves extending through an area of 24.400 hectares, are under the ownership of TKI and 70% is retrievable by underground operations. In open pits it is being worked by excavator-truck system and in underground pits, semi mechanized and classical methods are used.

The annual production capacity of the enterprise is at 10-12 million tons level. It provides fuel to the Soma Thermal Power Plant, to generate 1.034 MW (2 x 22, 6 x 165) power, and satisfies the demand in the market (Industrial and heating sector) at a sales level of 32%. This amount corresponds to 46% of TKI’s total market sales.

There is a coal washing facility with a capacity of 11,4 billion tons and bagging facility with a capacity of 3,3 billion tons per year. 


5.         SITE VISIT BERGAMA (PERGAMON)

TKI will also arrange a site visit to BERGAMA, a historical city, on 13 July 2012.
Medicine, written knowledge and Zeus is the glory of Pergamon- name of the ancient city found in the District of Bergama, 100 km from Izmir. Pergamon was one of the important trade centres in Mysian region during the Ancient Period. Pergamon was first mentioned in written documents early in the 4th century B.C. Buildings such as palaces, temples and theatres were built in the city when it became the capital, and the city was surrounded by perimeter walls and towers. After it was annexed to Rome, the Kingdom remained as one of the leading cities in Western Anatolia. 

The city of Pergamon, which was an -independent kingdom in 283 BC, maintained its importance as a major historical, cultural and commercial centre for a period of 150 years. An important health care centre of the ancient times –Asclepion- is situated  on the southwest of Pergamon. The Acropolis is located in the first settlement on steep hill at a height of 300 m, the Temple of Serapis dates back to the 2nd century, and  all contributes significantly to the local cultural heritage. 


6.         PRESENTATION

At least one participant from each member country is expected to make presentation
on the following issues:
• Energy legislation of the member countries and situation within the energy sector.
• General information about energy and coal sectors of the D-8 Countries,
• Coal reserves, production and trade in member countries,
• Activities and projects carried out regarding clean coal technologies (coal preparation,
improvement and enrichment, coal gasification etc.)
• Coal consumption in energy sector and other sectors
