Turkey’s leading airport operator, Tepe-Akfen-Vie Airports Holding (TAV), has received awards in three categories at the Emerging Markets Airport Awards (EMAA) ceremony in Dubai.

In a written statement released on Friday, TAV said the company was named “the best airport management company.” Georgia’s Tbilisi International Airport, which is operated by TAV Airports Holding, was selected “the best” among airports in Russia, the Caucasus and Eastern European countries. Also, Monastir Habib Bourguiba Airport in Tunisia, also operated by TAV, was selected “the best airport” among African airports.

TAV CEO M. Sani Şener said in the statement that they are proud of the company’s performance and that TAV workers are encouraged by such prominent awards. Recalling that TAV airports saw 42 million passengers last year, he said the number of passengers visiting TAV airports increased by 19 percent in the first three months when compared to the same quarter of 2009.

TAV operates 10 airports in Turkey, Georgia, Tunisia and Macedonia. The company was established in 1997 as a joint venture between the Tepe and Akfen groups. Following their establishment, TAV first undertook the operation of İstanbul Atatürk Airport.

Previously, TAV Holding had also announced its interest to help improving the service of Ngurah Rai Airport of Bali, and Soekarno-Hatta, Jakarta, Indonesia, to bring these two airports into a state-of-art international airports.

Former D-8 Secretary General, Dr. Dipo Alam, said that TAV Holding plans to develop these two airports through the BOT (Build, Operate, Transfer) cooperation scheme within 30 years. During the 3rd Working Group on Civil Aviation, in Bali Island, Indonesia, in June 2008, the company announced its serious interest since these two airports meet the requirement of having total passangers of more than seven millions per year.

TAV interested to follow up the oppportunity of investment and civil aviation cooperation between the D-8 memberstates. “We have had encouraged TAV to take up this opportunity, since there has not yet any private companies invested in Indonesian airports,” noted Dr. Alam.
