The Turkish International Cooperation and Development Agency (TIKA) is the Turkish Government’s Development Cooperation Agency.  TIKA has coordination offices in 20 countries and operates in many countries across Africa, Asia and Europe, delivering development assistance to partner countries through its projects and activities.

D-8 Secretary General, Dipo Alam, met with the President of TIKA, Mr. Musa Kulaklikaya, in Ankara last July 2009 to discuss new modalities for further cooperation and development of D-8 networking, such as projects and grants from international organization. In that cordial meeting, the two figures shared experiences and views about development issues and agricultural implementation techniques. The talks also confered about various other issues such as the importance of public & private sectors cooperation and the possibilities of funding in the form of soft loans emanated by development agencies to the improving position of developing countries in the world economy.

In 2009, TIKA implemented a record number of projects in comparison to previous years.  The projects, which cover a range of sectors, were aimed at improving social and economic infrastructure, cultural cooperation and communication as well as contributing to social peace and delivering emergency humanitarian aid.

Alam said that Turkey is an important country within developing countries, and said that Turkey directs its development assistance within the tradition of building a ’strategic bridge’ to help build and maintain the link between developed and developing countries. Turkey has also taken important steps towards becoming a ‘Donor Country’ by realising the Millenium Development Goals of the United Nations.
