Egypt Tourism is On the Up Again
Cairo, Egypt | July 20, 2009 by
Egypt’s tourism industry, which suffered a decline of 9.5% during the first half of 2009, is showing signs of recovery, according to Egyptian Tourism Minister Zoheir Garranah.
That 9.5% fall was an improvement on the 17% drop during the first quarter of 2009, Garranah told Bloomberg, while tourist arrivals in the first week of July were actually up for the same period of 2008.
“These figures are very positive as they indicate that tourism is recovering quickly from the slump experienced after November 2008,” said Beltone Financial senior economist Reham El-Desoki.
Tourism is the largest sector of Egypt’s economy - earning the country US $11 billion last year.
These latest figures suggest a revenue of about US $2.6 billion in the second quarter of 2009 when tourist numbers fell 8.7% year-on-year.
Egypt attracted a total of 12.8 million visitors in 2008.
D-8 countries posses a great deal of potency in tourism sector. Malaysia, Turkey, Indonesia, Egypt, and Iran are the member countries that record high percentage of tourist arrival growth each year.
