Zorlu Enerji of Turkey Visited Secretariat; Sharpening Energy Cooperation within D-8 Countries

Zorlu Enerji made a courtesy visit to the D-8 Secretariat on Wednesday (10/06/2009). Zorlu is the first Turkish company to establish wind farm for power generation in Pakistan, who signed Energy Purchase Agreement with Hyderabad Electric Supply Corporation of Pakistan for purchase of 6 MW electricity generated at the company’s facility in Jhimpir earlier this year.

The Zorlu Enerji wind farm in Pakistan would be one of the cleanest power plants in the country displacing 10,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year, as compared to a fossil fuel power plant. Harnessing the strong winds coming from south west, the wind farm is first commercial wind power project of the country, comprising 5 towers in the first phase with an installed capacity of 1.2 MW wind turbine generator per tower.

Zorlu Enerji is a top calibre company in Turkey. It has carried out various projects in the area, such as the construction & operation of two natural gas power plant (capacity 680MW electricity/640Gcal/h heat) in Russia; 6 natural gas power plants (463 MW), 7 hydro, 1 geothermal, 1 gas turbine power plants (141 MW) in Turkey, as well as the Pakistan Wind Power Project of 49,5 MW and planned to be expanded up to 300MW in 2010.

Zorlu emphasized the importance of the wind energy project in Pakistan as part of the way to “break the chain” of poverty in developing countries, by providing investment and making growth. The delegation also discussed various topics including the possibilities of enlargement the project in Pakistan, establishing consortium to further strengthen the financial scheme for upcoming projects, as well as other related issues.

D-8 Organization underlined that there will be an opportunity to cast these issues for discussion at length in the August 2009 Commissioner Meeting in KL, Malaysia, and stressed that a platform such as Working Group in renewable energy to support and sustain the geothermal, hydro, and biodiesel sectors. For the best possible outcome, D-8 shall make necessary steps to actualise the expansion of similar projects within D-8 countries.

“We shall approach the Minister of Energy of Turkey, to support us in promoting the public-private cooperation in energy sector,” said Secretary General of D-8, Dipo Alam.

Alam also offered Zorlu Enerji to take participation in the Energy Exhibition in Indonesia which will be held in 14-17 October in the capital, Jakarta.

Zorlu Enerji delegation was led by Murat Sungar Bursa (CEO of Zorlu Enerji) and Yagmur Ozdemir, as the Project Manager of the wind farm in Pakistan. From the D-8 Secretariat side, Dipo Alam (Secretary General), Kia Tabatabaee (Director), and Esen Gonen (Economist) took part in the discussion.
