D-8 Countries Meet in Abuja, Search for Alternative Sources of Power
Abuja, Nigeria | June 22, 2009 by
MEMBERS of the D-8 countries, earlier this month converged in Nigeria to find more proactive approaches to the quest for viable other sources of energy for its members.
Delegates from Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Pakistan, Turkey, and Nigeria met under the platform of the First D-8 Experts’ Working Group (WG) meeting to work out the role of energy research and development in meeting the D-8 objectives.
Presenting a speech on behalf of Nigeria’s D-8 Commissioner, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Science and Technology, Mr. Wahab Jimoh, stressed that the member countries’ scientific research institutions and universities would be required to serve for providing solutions to challenges that might confront the organisation in its activities with regards to industry, health, energy, science and technology, and related sectors.
He stressed: “This objective is now very much justified as epitomized in the challenges within the energy sector.
“The theme of the Experts’ Meeting, ‘The role of energy research and development in meeting the D-8 objectives’ is appropriate considering global attention to the spiral rise in price of crude oil which reached a peak of about $145/barrel some twelve months ago and its sudden crash to just over &40 /barrel at the moment.”
He continued: “Though a number of D-8 might be naturally blessed with different energy resources, the events of the past twelve months more than ever indicated that the D-8 member states must join the world in providing an affordable sustained energy base and a clean environment. One of the mechanisms for achieving this is through improved and intensified energy research and development efforts.
“It is my conviction that while the D-8 delegates brainstorm in R&D efforts in the traditional areas of coal, oil and gas, nuclear, renewable energy, you would also keep an eye on the emerging new technologies of biofuel, geothermal and hydrogen.”

It is quite gladdening to note that D-8 is there to meet the needs and aspirations of member countries. If we do not blow our trumpet, nobody will do so for us. To achieve our goals, we must be more committed, at country levels, to economic prosperity anchored on food self-sufficiency, functional education with emphasis on science and technology, health care delivery (free or highly subsidised) to the largest possible population. At D-8 membership level, there must be true commitment to help each other to succeed, because if you do not want your friend to be a king, you will not be friend to a kind. Ultimately, both or all of you will be down. Information is life so I expect that more resources will be spent on information dissemination to give a significant boost to D-8’s activities.
I am delighted that my country Nigeria is the host of the D-8 Secretariat for the next two years. With the calibre of person to run the affairs of the chamber for the period, I am sure that the sky will be the limit for D-8. The Chairman, Dr. Herbert Demola Ajayi is a well grounded man who I will not want to talk about lest it seems I am praise-singing. Your independent investigation is all you need to make your decision.
Up Nigeria! Up D-8.
