Biodiesel will contribute to the economic growth

The Malaysian government has approved 91 licences with a total approved capacity of 10.2 million tonnes of biodiesel which will contribute to the economic growth of the country, Deputy Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities of Malaysia Senator A. Kohilan Pillay, said.

As at the end of October 2008, a total of 14 plants are in operation with a total production capacity of 1.68 million tonnes, he said.

Last year Malaysia produced 129,715 tonnes of plam-based methyl ester and out of that amount 95,013 tonnes valued at RM253.2 million were exported, Kohilan said when officiating the Workshop On Biodiesel Implementation In Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur on Monday.

Kohilan said that to further promote the use of renewable and sustainable form of energy, the government on Oct 30 approved the mandatory blending of 5 per cent palm methyl ester with petroleum diesel for use in stages in the country.

“Initially, this will be implemented on government vehicles operated by the City Hall of Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) and subsequently extended throughout the country. Full implementation is targeted for early 2010,” he added.

He said some of the petroleum companies have already conveyed their support and willingness to cooperate with the Ministry to ensure the success of the mandatory implementation of biodiesel blend in the country.

Malaysia has expressed its interest in biofuel cooperation among D-8 member countries in the Working Group for Energy this year in Cairo, Egypt.
