The 4th WG Industry will be held in Bali, on October 2008
Jakarta, Indonesia | September 09, 2008 by
At the 6th Summit of the Developing Eight Countries on July 2008 in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, the Heads of State/Government of Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey reiterated their commitment to carry on the ideas of economic cooperation among D-8 countries.
In order to reach that, D-8 has developed certain structure such as senior official meeting and expert meeting to facilitate decision making process. To further elaborate ideas on cooperation and business collaboration, D-8 has established Working Groups. One of those Working Groups is WG on Industry (WGI), which has become an official forum to explore areas and forms of cooperation on prospective industries since the 1st meeting of the WGI.
In the last Summit, the Head of States/Governments of the D-8 put great concerns on the current global shortage and increasing prices of oil and foods items that could threat the economic stability. For that reason, the D-8 agrees to deepen cooperation, including the involvement of private sectors to establish joint ventures for agricultural and foods supporting products such as fertilizer, animal feed and seed in order to raise food products. D-8 countries also reaffirmed their commitment to continue on going efforts in the energy sector, and emphasized the importance of enhancing capacity building, transfer of technology, exploration of new sources of supply, development of alternative fuels, including renewable sources of energy.
Back to back with the 6th Summit, business communities of the D-8 got together to explore business opportunities and collaboration which could be promoted among the D-8 members. Business forum had a focus on 3 promising areas of cooperation, namely Biotechnology, Hallal Industry and Renewable Energy.
For this reason, D-8 will hold a meeting for the Working Group on Industry in Bali, Indonesia, on 27-28 October 2008. This will be the 4th meeting after the 3rd Working Group on Industry which was held on May 2007 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where members have reached a number of deliverables (see ToR attached).
The D-8 Secretariat shall provide the necessary secretariat support to WG on Industry of D-8.
