Bangladesh Migrant Workers Potentially Exceed 9 Millions This Year
Dhaka, Bangladesh | August 20, 2008 by
Adviser for Foreign Affairs and Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment of Bangladesh, Dr Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury expressed the hope that employment of Bangladeshis abroad would exceed 9,000,000 this year if the present trend continues.
“This will be an all-time record, breaking even the previous year’s record of 8,32,000,” he said. “Already, I understand, we have cleared 5,90,000 applications so far this year,” he said.
“But this should give us no reason for complacency. Our goal is to improve skills of potential migrant workers and promote the welfare of those who are already abroad, and these are the two aspects we will emphasize more than just numbers,” he added.
He expressed his satisfaction over a visit to the Chittagong Technical Training Centre Wednesday.
“I was happy to see we are providing training in marine technology there in collaboration with the private sector. This comes at a time when we are also exporting marine vessels. I believe this will add great value to the quality of our workers,” Dr Iftekhar Chowdhury further observed.
As to figures, he said, there would be ups and downs in monthly statistics of numbers going “but the bigger picture is, improving quality and promoting welfare, one through appropriate training and the other through continuous diplomatic efforts”.
He also called upon the recruiting agencies to procure better and more decent offers of jobs from abroad, and not to exploit the poor aspiring migrants. The Foreign Adviser also said he has instructed the Ministry and Missions abroad to continually search for newer markets.
“I am happy over the latest demand of 200 skilled workers from the United States. That is exactly the kind of offers we are looking for,” he added. On Kuwait, he said: “I have urged upon the Kuwaiti Ministers to help resolve any outstanding issues. We have also nominated a new Ambassador to Kuwait.”
