D-8 Plans to Participate in FAO Conferences
Rome, Italy | February 10, 2008 by
Suggested to increase cooperation with some international organizations in the 5th D-8 Summit in Bali, Indonesia, in May 2006, D-8 Secretary General, Dipo Alam, met Mr. Stephen Dowd and Mr. Vesselin Petrov of Conference, Council and Government Relations Branch of FAO in Rome Italy, on January 24th, 2008.
D-8, without “reinventing the wheel” some programs that already led by some international organization, such as FAO, does not need to repeat same program but synergistically work together to sharpen and focus into the need of D-8 countries.
For example, on June 3-5 2008 at the FAO Headquarters, Rome, Italy, a High Level Conference on World Food Security and the Challenges of Climate Change and Bioenergy would be participated by D-8 delegates, and by that time, D-8 plans to have back-to-back meeting after the conference to follow-up some possible action plans to be implemented related to the interest of D-8 member states.
The overall purpose of the Conference is to address food security and poverty reduction in the face of climate change and energy security. More specifically, the objective is to assess the challenges faced by the food and agriculture sectors from climate change and bioenergy in order to identify the steps required to safeguard food security within the broader context of change and bioenergy at the global, regional and national levels.
The possibility of having back-to-back meeting on the issue of the conference was discussed with FAO officials whom D-8 will propose Terms of Reference of the cooperation to FAO soon.
