D-8 Will Propose a Cooperation with FAO on the Issue of Bioenergy Partnership for Sustainable Development

fao-1On January 24th, 2008 at the Headquarters of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, in Rome, Italy, the Secretary General of D-8, Dipo Alam met and discussed the issue of Bioenergy and sustainable development with Dr. Peter Holmgren, Director of Environment, Climate Change and Bioenergy Division, Natural Resources Management and Environment Department of FAO.

In D-8 Bali 5th Summit in May 2006, D-8 Head of States assigned D-8 Organization to pay attention and set a cooperation program regarding renewable energy, including bioenergy, biofuels, and biodiesel, since developing countries has severely facing the tremendous increase of oil prices for supporting their development.

Without “reinventing the wheels”, the Secretary General took an initiative to work and cooperate by asking FAO to support D-8 Working group on Energy that discussed also the bioenrgy issue, including issue on energy and poverty. D-8 Meeting on Energy in 2008 will be held in Cairo, Egypt.

On the renewable energy topic some issues that also focused by FAO on their Global Bionergy Partnership Program (GBEP), for examples: how to suggest rules and tools to promote sustainable biomass and buoenergy development; how to facilitate investments in bioenergy; how to promote project development and implementation; and how to foster R&D and commercial bionergy activities; will also be raised in D-8 WG on Energy.
