The 24th D-8 Commission Meeting in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, to tackle strategic issues and future progress

The 24th session of the D-8 commission meeting will be starting on November 22nd, 2007 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The D-8 Secretary General, Dr. Dipo Alam, said that the meeting will put special emphasize on the most crucial issue:  finalising the Rules of Origin and Offer List of the D-8 Preferential Trade Agreement.

“We at the Secretariat, really hope that this 24th session can bring us a finalised version of the Rules of Origin, as well as the Offer List of PTA, since they play a very important step for our concrete cooperation,” he said in his office on Monday.

He urged trade officials of member countries, namely of Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey to continue their work in concluding the rules of origin and other related instruments to support the implementation of the Preferential Trade Agreement.

The 24th session will be seek to provide leaders with the opportunity to deliberate on ways and means to strengthen D-8 cooperation, particularly D-8 intra trade and economic cooperation, notably those “down-to-earth” programmes in trade, industry cooperation, and technology that has been emphasized by Secretary General (such as those that encourage D-8 private aviation companies to participate more actively in D-8 aviation programs and frameworks), as well as addressing effectively the basic problems of poverty and development.

The meeting shall hear report from the Secretary General, of the meetings that have been convened since the 23rd Session of the D-8 Commission, namely: (1) The First Meeting of Director Generals of Civil Aviation, Antalya, Turkey, 27-29 June 2007; (2) the Second Meeting of Director Generals of Civil Aviation, Esfahan, Iran, 8-10 October 2007; and (3) Report of the Workshop for Preferential Trade Agreement Rules of Origin, Kuala Lumpur, 29-30 October 2007. Another strategic content that are scheduled for discussion are the D-8 Road Map, draft proposal by the Secretariat on Staff, Financial and Budgetary Regulation for future Permanent Secretariat, calendar of events, and consideration and adoption of the Report of the 24th Session of the D-8 Commission.

The meeting is scheduled to be concluded by November 23rd, 2007.
