Iran will pioneer a D-8 Meeting on Organic Agriculture and Medical Herbs

Following the initatitive of Secretary General in the 23rd Commissioners Meeting in Jakarta last May, 2007, regarding the need of D-8 to pay more attention on the potency of organic products, organic agriculture, medical herbs, since this sectros has multifunction to promote and empower the potency of developing countries to develop and produce organic products, roles of women in organic agriculture, small and medium enterprises, as well as eco-tourism of organic villages, Iran confirms her readiness to host for the first time the establishment of D-8 Working Group on Organic Agriculture and Medical Herbs this year. The meeting will be organised by the Department of the Information Technology Cooperation of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and will be covering wide medical issues including IMOD drug for HIV carriers and AIDS patients, Spinal Cord Injury Repair & Bioflash, as well as Unique Weapon in Malaria Campaigning. During a working visit to Tehran in September 10th, 2007, Secretary General and Deputy Commissioner of Iran, Dr. Soeleiman Pour, had a meeting with met Dr. J. Khalghani, Deputy Minister and Head of AERO (Agricultural Research and Education Organization) of Iran, a reserach institute with 15,000 employees and 5000 researchers, to discuss plan to establish D-8 Working Group on Organic Agriculture and Medical Herbs.
According to the Secretary General, besides inviting D-8 research institutes, manufacturers and producers of organic and medical herbs products, international organization such as IFOAM, this metting will also invites experts supported by UNCTAD, as expressed by Ambassador Lakshmi Puri, Director of UNCTAD to Dr. Alam.
As published in this website on July 23, medical sector in Iran is gaining an important leap in the last decade, by producing and exporting about 120 kinds of herbal medicines, from just 10 kinds in the 1990s. The head of Traditional Medicine Research Center , Mahmoud Mosaddeq, elaborates this fact while speaking on the sidelines of the 3rd International Congress on Traditional Medicine and Material Medical in Malaysia .
Mosaddeq, a member of the faculty at Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, said given its high potentials in the field, Iran is a pioneering Islamic state in traditional medicine. He unveiled a plan to create a link between research centers for traditional medicines of Islamic countries in near future.
The expert believed that herbal medicines can contribute between 30 and 40 percent to the healthcare system.
Recalling that Iran hosted two traditional medicine congresses, Mosaddeq noted that such gatherings provide traditional and herbal medicine experts a chance to exchange views. They also serve as venues to showcase latest products.
The meeting will take place on October 29, 2007 in Tehran.
