Director General of Nigerian Civil Aviation, Dr. Harold Demuren confirmed to attend the 2nd D-8 Director General Civil Aviatian (DGCA) Meeting in Isfahan, Iran, September 8-10, 2007. Dr. Demuren is very interested on D-8 civil aviation cooperation, since there are a lot of opportunities for Nigeria cooperate with other D-8 countries.

aircraftNigeria Aviation Ministry has some program on civil aviation that are potential as cooperation programs with D-8 aviation communities, to promote greater mutual understanding between the aviation authorities in the D-8 member states. Among the points that Nigeria is keen to discuss in the meeting is on how to explore the opportunities that include issues such as provision of effective logistics and coordination at the major international airports, provision of fire cover both in equipment and skilled manpower, rehabilitation of dilapidated runways, provision of adequate Visual Landing Aids, refurbishment of terminal building structures, provision of adequate passenger facilitation processes at the international airports, provision of proper cargo facilities for trans shipments of cargo, provision of adequate airport utilities including power, Telephones, Water, etc.

Other are opportunities ranging from (1) maintenance hangar, as the existing Hangar owned by the airline needs to be refurbished and equipped with modern facilities for 24 hour aircraft; (2) maintenance services; (3) Aircraft Engine Workshop, a good workshop that can effect A, B, C & D checks on various grades of aircraft used in the country and in the West African sub-region.

HANGER PROJECTS
Aircraft maintenance is a crucial investment opportunity in the Nigerian Aviation industry given the fact the country is seriously yet to build an in-house maintenance capacity. The idea of establishing a National Aircraft Maintenance Centre has been with the Ministry since late 1970 primarily to conserve scare foreign exchange. The Federal Government has approved the establishment of an integrated national aircraft maintenance facility to carter for the complete maintenance of all aircraft both civil and military operating in the country. It was built then on a Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT), however it has now been amended to operate on a Lease arrangement.

AREAS OF INVESTMENTS

A firm of reputable consultants is currently working with FAAN with a view to transforming the standards of Nigerian Airports. Since the inception of the Authority, Aeronautical sources of revenue have contributed about 80% of the Authority’s total revenue. The focus now is to increase the non-aeronautical sources such as rent, concession fees, and divided from subsidiaries, car park fees and premium ground rent.

There are massive investment opportunities in modernizing equipment and infrastructure at the airports. In this regard, management is exploring how best to utilize the idle vast airport lands and turn them into useful ventures, such as development/construction of airport terminals, development of five star hotels within some strategic locations, installations /maintenance of equipment, cold rooms, constructing warehouses etc. DGCA of Nigeria has confirmed her keen interest in making the most of the 2nd D-8 Director General Civil Aviatian (DGCA) Meeting in Isfahan, Iran, to formulate clear ideas on the issue listed above. Similarly, D-8 Secretariat wish the member states that these issues can be addressed and discussed together for mutual benefit of the aviation industry of D-8.
