Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia | July 15, 2007 by D-8 Secretariat

Millions of tourists are expected to visit Malaysia next year and tourism revenue, estimated to total RM35 billion this year, is expected to increase at an even faster pace.

According to the Malaysian Tourism Minister YB Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor on Saturday evening, the arrival of Indonesian tourists in Malaysia continued to rise every year. Malaysia has set a target to lure around two million Indonesian visitors in 2007.

This year, he expected a 36 percent increase in the arrival of Indonesian tourists to his country. Last year, Indonesian tourists visited Malaysia stood 1.2 million. Tengku Mansor said between January and March, the arrival of Indonesian tourists to that country reached 375,570 people. If compared to last year's corresponding period, there was an increase of about 26.4 percent.

This encouraging growth needs to be maintained and developed well by utilising both countries' common framework on tourism cooperation provided by working group on tourism of D-8. "We shall be discussing on how to collaborate together to increase this volume of cooperation in the Second D-8 Expert Meeting on Ecotourism Cooperation among member countries on 26-29 August 2007 in west Azerbaijan Province - Iran," says the D-8 Secretary General, Dr. Dipo Alam.

He also said that e-tourism experts from UNCTAD has also been contacted to take part in this meeting in order to get a more global contribution in D-8 cooperation issues.
