D-8 Secretariat Leads Public-Private Partnership Forums in Istanbul, October 18-21, 2007

Istanbul, Turkey | July 10, 2007 by D-8 Secretariat

As a follow up to a meeting at the 5th World Chamber of Commerce in Istanbul, on July 4-6th, 2007, by the D-8 Secretary General, Dr. Dipo Alam, D-8 Director, Ambassador Kia Tabatabaee, and the members of D-8 International Chambers of Commerce (ICC), a decision has been reached to take the opportunity to make use of all the international forum and gatherings such as conferences, seminars and exhibitions as a forum public-private partnerships.

The Secretary General has taken initiative to cooperate with exhibition and fair companies in Istanbul to support D-8 ICC members through a public-private partnership forum. As a city located strategically both for Asian and European market, Istanbul is always bustling with exhibition and fair all through the year. This attribute and opportunity of Istanbul should be appraised by all D-8 member states through their ICC, to get a more participation of private sectors in developing the D8 economies.

"I hope that the reform and coperation shift in D8 can really promote business activites which are more 'down-to-earth' in trade, industry cooperation, and technology," said Dr. Alam on Thursday. The importance to get private sectors involved is due to the fact that for the last 10 years since establishment, most of D-8 meetings are dominated by governmental delegation, eventhough the topics touched are industries, trade, tourism, and investment issues.

As a near future agenda, Secretary General and his team at the Secretariate will strive to broaden the coperation networking of D-8 by getting a more extensive participation of private sectors, and arranging various private sectors-oriented programs. As a modality, the Secretariate has prepared three exhibition programs in October 2007 to support this objective.
