Iran to build oil refinery in Indonesia

Tehran, Iran | July 01, 2007 by D-8 Secretariat

The Iranian government is planning to build an oil refinery plant worth more thab USD 5 billion in Banten province, Indonesia.

Iranian Ambassador to Indonesia Behrouz Kamalvandi said Saturday, "President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad met with the Indonesian president in Jakarta several months ago to sign various Indonesian-Iranian cooperation documents, including the development of an oil refinery plant in Banten," Iran's Shana news agency reported.

In his press statement sent to the Banten provincial administration, Kamalvandi said that the refinery plant would likely be built in the Bojonegara subdistrict, because it was close to the coast and would make it easy for marketing the product.

In that location, the regional government of Banten is also planning to construct international standard support facilities.

"Refinery processes need a lot of water and that is why Bojonegara was selected to be the site of the plant. We have carried out pre-feasibility studies on the possibilities of Bojonegara to be selected," the ambassador said.

He said that the feasibility studies were conducted very carefully because a site for such a plant required extensive land.

The project will benefit Banten as it would create thousands of jobs, he said.

The plant would refine some 20,000 barrels of oil per day. "This would meet a quarter of Indonesia's need for refined oil products," he concluded.
