Egyptian Foreign Minister received D-8 Secretary General
Cairo, Egypt | March 10, 2007 by
Foreign Minister, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, received the new Secretary-General of the Developing Eight Group (D-8), Dipo Alam, on March 10th. Mr. Alam’s visit is the first of its kind to a D-8 member state since assuming office.
During the meeting, Aboul Gheit affirmed the importance given by Egypt to the Developing Eight Group, especially that the group includes the largest Islamic countries, in terms of population, economic capabilities and political weight, which enables the group to lead economic and commercial cooperation among the Islamic countries in particular and the developing countries in general.
The new Secretary-General commended Egypt’s axial role within the framework of the group, and affirmed his keenness to make Egypt the first country to visit after assuming office to listen to the viewpoints of the Egyptian officials concerning supporting and developing economic and commercial cooperation activities among the D-8 member states. He also mentioned that despite the increase in trade exchange among the member states, which mounted up to 127% during the last five years, it still does not live up to the immense economic capabilities of these countries. He stated that he intends to focus on doubling trade exchange among the member countries through activating the signed trade agreements.
The D8 group was established in 1997 and includes Egypt, Turkey, Indonesia, Malaysia, Iran, Bangladesh, Nigeria and Pakistan. The group aims at enhancing economic and trade exchange among these countries.
